Stronger before treatment, faster to recover

Community prehabilitation that prepares people physically and emotionally for cancer surgery, working alongside your hospital teams.

Better prepared patients, better outcomes after surgery

Prehabilitation helps reduce complications after surgery, shortens hospital stays and helps people get back to work and everyday life sooner.

Between diagnosis and treatment, we support people to become more active, make lifestyle changes such as stopping smoking and cutting down on alcohol, and look after their emotional wellbeing. Exercise also helps with the fatigue, low mood and anxiety many people with cancer live with.

We bring the same behaviour change approach used across all our services, so people start with a My Story conversation and get a plan built around their treatment, their fitness and what matters to them.

Support that covers body and mind

Each person’s plan combines these, shaped around their treatment date.

Exercise

Personalised activity to build strength and fitness before surgery, led by physical activity specialists.

Lifestyle change

Help to stop smoking, cut down on alcohol and eat well, drawing on our stop smoking and lifestyle services.

Emotional wellbeing

Support to manage anxiety and low mood, so people feel more in control going into treatment.

What prehab aims to achieve

  • Fewer complications after surgery
  • Shorter hospital stays

Award-winning prehab in Nottingham

Through Your Health Notts, we deliver the NUH Prehab Service in partnership with Nottingham University Hospitals, Self Help UK and CARE (Cancer and Rehabilitation Exercise).

It prepares patients physically and emotionally for major cancer surgery, aiming to reduce time in hospital and help people live well after treatment.

The service has won two Patient Experience National Awards (PENNA) for partnership working that improves the experience and personalisation of care.

Built around your cancer pathway

Prehab works best when it’s part of the pathway from the start. We agree referral routes with hospital teams so people are referred soon after diagnosis, and keep clinicians updated on progress before surgery.

Because prehab sits within our wider lifestyle services, people can carry on with activity, stop smoking or weight support after treatment, close to home, without a new referral.
