Why your wellbeing is important and how to improve it

22nd August 2018

For many, exercise has become an essential part of the daily routine, whether it be to lose weight, gain muscle, improve confidence or simply to be enjoyed as a hobby.

Whatever your reason, exercise is a great way to improve your overall health and wellbeing, which is important and often overlooked.

In a world that seems to run at a million miles an hour, we often forget to take time out for ourselves, but our bodies are clever and have a subconscious way of telling us to ‘put number 1 i.e. YOU first.’

So why do we ignore it?

Our wellbeing is affected all the time. Maybe you sit down a lot during the day? You’re in an office with no natural sunlight? Or day-to-day stresses take over? Whatever the reasons, they can have a big impact on our wellbeing.

The NHS states the importance of good overall wellbeing;
“Mental, physical and social wellbeing are virtually inseparable. Good mental health is a vital asset for individuals, families and society. It enhances healthy lifestyles, physical health and functional abilities and promotes recovery from illness. It also has important social benefits on educational attainment, economic productivity, social and family relationships, social cohesion and overall quality of life across the entire population.”

If your body recognises the need to take your wellbeing seriously, it’s important that you listen to it.

So how can you improve your health and wellbeing to live a happier, healthier and longer life?

1. Exercise

It’s a big one when wanting to improve your mental and physical state and do you know why? Because it works!
Exercise has a million and one benefits from weight loss and boosting energy to improving your mood and helping to combat health issues.

Exercise stimulates various brain chemicals leaving you feeling happier and more relaxed, so why not walk to the office for a change? Or go out for a run on your lunch break?

2. Take time for yourself

It seems the most obvious but one which is often not practiced enough! It’s an essential part to your wellbeing and there are lots of different ways to do it. Try relaxation techniques such as listening to music or do more of what you enjoy, whether that be long walks or running through the park.

3. Be sociable

Get out and about and meet new people or spend more time with your family and friends!

Look out for workshops or activities local to you such as running or cycling groups – this way you can enjoy the benefits of exercise with like-minded people.

After all, as human beings we are sociable animals – we like to build strong relationships and provide support to others.
