People struggling to lose weight are being encouraged to take advantage of free support following shocking new figures released by NHS Data.
The research revealed that the number of people admitted to hospital in Stockport due to obesity-related conditions rose by three quarters from 2014/15 to 2015/16.
Yet residents of the borough can access nutrition and exercise sessions free of charge thanks to ABL Health, which carries out the Choose to Change scheme in partnership with Stockport Clinical Commissioning Group.
Dr Sheena Bedi, Chief Executive of ABL Health, said: “Obesity is the biggest public health crisis facing the UK, with more people developing obesity-related illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer – and this in turn causes a significant financial burden on the NHS.
“The good news is that there is help available for people wanting to lose weight and become more active and healthy. Choose to Change supports people to make small changes to their diet and physical activity levels which can make a big difference to their lifestyle – and it doesn’t cost a penny.”
The Choose to Change scheme has supported more than 400 people since it started in the area in January 2016.
Anyone struggling to lose weight who feels that the time is right for them to make a change can find out more about Choose to Change by talking to their GP or contacting us direct on 01204 570 999.
