People in Manchester are being encouraged to take advantage of free support to lose weight and get healthier this year.
ABL Health, working in partnership with Manchester City Council, runs adult and family weight management sessions across the city.
Michelle Oakes joined ABL’s Enable programme after her GP recommended she looked at exercise and nutrition and the impact of her lifestyle on her stress levels and newly-diagnosed autism. She lost 5.8kg through the programme, which focuses on the benefits of healthy eating and exercise.
She said: “Enable has taught me how to lose weight healthily rather than crash dieting. I didn’t think I could lose weight, but I have learnt that I can, and it’s definitely not through a lack of eating! I feel like I am using different taste buds – and you don’t need a lot of money to eat healthily, you can eat healthily on a budget – that’s what I’m doing. I also fit in my old clothes and that’s saved me some money- I don’t have to go out buying new ones!
“I have learnt that you can still eat food that you enjoy, but the portion sizes and the amount of energy makes a difference. My energy levels have improved because I am eating more healthy foods and having less sugar highs. I am focusing on small changes so it’s not as daunting.
“I never thought that making changes to my nutrition and activity levels would have such an impact on everything else. I just feel better in myself- I feel like me again and I haven’t felt like me for a while now. It’s not as hard as you think, I have learnt to trust myself and stick to the basics. Other people have even been commenting that they can see that I have lost weight, and that’s good enough for me!”
Fran Speakman, Project Lead at ABL Health, said: “I’d encourage anyone wanting to make a change for 2018 to consider joining one of our free programmes. Our lifestyle coaches can help you make positive, lifelong change to enable you to lead a healthier, better life. Get in touch with us today to find out if you are eligible for our support.”
